Uncle Larry's First Silver Star

Late Sergt. Larry Flynn
Decorated, Cited by FDR

Given Silver Star Posthumously for
Gallantry in Action at Guadalcanal
Daring and Care of Wounded Lauded

WASHINGTON, D. C., Aug. 13.– Sergt. Lawrence Holmes Flynn, U. S. Marine Corps, 22, of Brockton, Mass., has been posthumously awarded the Silver Star medal for repeatedly exposing himself to enemy fire to deliver messages and administer to the wounded, in action on Guadalcanal.
Sergt. Flynn, son of Mrs. Mary M. Flynn, of 52 Augustine street, Brockton, was reported killed in a subsequent action early last month.
Accompanying the decoration for his heroism on Guadalcanal was a presidential citation:
"For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity during action against enemy Japanese forces on Guadalcanal, Solomon Islands, on the night of Sept. 13-14, 1942. On the ridge 1000 yards south of Henderson Field, Sergt. Flynn, repeatedly crossing areas exposed to hostile fire, placed units in their proper sectors of the line, organized ammunition carrying parties, delivered messages and engaged in vigorous hand-to-hand combat with Japanese troops. During a momentary lull in the battle, he, with complete disregard for his own personal safety, started to search for and administer to the wounded who were lying in the exposed areas. His heroic conduct was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States naval service."
